Father's Day Concert with The Stockwell Brothers, Folk/Bluegrass
After almost four decades playing together across the U.S. and in Europe, The Stockwell Brothers are Vermont’s longest running folk/ bluegrass group. Starting out in 1969, they won a handful of contests, released their first album “The Green Mountain Boys” and appeared in concert with artists from Earl Scruggs to the Mahavishnu Orchestra- all by their mid teens. The Stockwell’s repertoire spans traditional and progressive styles, but their trademark acoustic trio sound focuses on new singer/ songwriter material recast with banjo, alternative rhythms and three-part harmonies.
8 p.m., Phelps Barn, $10 tickets, or have dinner at the inn that evening and concert is free.
July 2 & 3
Second Annual Grafton Music Festival
Simba, Red Molly, The Stockwell Brothers and of course, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. See details.

Samirah Evans and Her Handsome Devils, Jazz & Blues

The Old Tavern welcomes back Samirah Evans and Her Handsome Devils for an evening of Jazz and Blues music. Samirah Evans relocated to Vermont from New Orleans in 2006 as a result of Katrina. She was a fixture of the New Orleans music scene since 1990 appearing regularly at premier venues and festivals.
In 2008, Samirah formed her band Samirah Evans and Her Handsome Devils just in time for the release of her second CD "My Little Bodhisattva". The band compliments Samirah's style perfectly, which is a mix of swampy, sultry, and electrifyingly, soulful takes on jazz standards and originals.
Her Handsome Devils hail from New England and New York and include Miro Sprague, piano (not pictured), Jason Ennis, guitar, Michael Zsoldos, saxophone, Michael O'Brien, bass, and Conor Meehan, drums.
Samirah intends to release her third CD featuring the Handsome Devils at the end of 2010. Samirah Evans and Her Handsome Devils have been quickly gaining momentum in their popularity touring the New England region.
8 p.m., Phelps Barn, $10 tickets, or have dinner at the inn that evening and concert is free.
August 15
The Inventions Trio, Jazz
The Inventions Trio brings together the talents of gifted cellist Alisa Horn and two classically trained masters of jazz and improvisation with pianist Bill Mays and trumpeter/flugelhornist Marvin Stamm. Together they present programs that explore the intersection of chamber music and jazz. Inventions grew out of Mays' and Stamm's long association and duo work together. The Inventions Trio is a touring performance group, always seeking to expand its repertoire as evidenced by the release of their second CD in 2008, "The Delaware River Suite."
This evening's concert is complimentary, made possible through the Windham Foundation's Grafton Fund.
8 p.m., Phelps Barn.
September 4
A Far Cry Quartet
A string quartet (two violinists, violist and
cellist) from the exciting young Boston-based chamber orchestra "A Far
Cry” will perform two classical masterpieces: "Dissonance" Quartet by
Mozart and the "American" Quartet by Antonin Dvorak. Hailed by the Boston Globe as "one of Boston's most promising classical
music groups,” A Far Cry is made of a tightly-knit group of 17 young
professional musicians who sought the freedom and flexibility of a string
quartet as well as the power and beauty of an orchestra.
Operating with rotating leadership and no
conductor, A Far Cry is generating interest not only in the concert hall, but
also with its innovative model. All artistic decisions are made by vote as a
collective, and the musicians take care of all the behind-the-scenes work, from
booking concerts to designing programs. Orchestra members performing in Grafton
include Ashley Vandiver (violin), Annie Rabbat (violin), Frank Shaw (viola) and
Loewi Lin (cello).
This concert is presented
by Grafton resident Liisa Kissel. The concert is at 4 p.m. and will be held at
the White Church on Main Street in Grafton. Admission is free, with a suggested
$10 donation to benefit the orchestra. Children are encouraged to attend for
free.
